Year of Upheaval in 1990 – Concern and Criticism

Explore eight works of art and learn about the different ways people in Germany experienced the year of upheaval in 1990. In addition to feeling joy over new freedoms and the possibility of German unification, people also worried about their uncertain future and the dramatic social changes taking place. Through their paintings, the East Side Gallery artists express positive thoughts about the year of upheaval as well as concern about problems such as racism and consumerism.
