Karin Porath was born in Perleberg (East Germany) in 1954 and now lives in Schöneck, Hesse. She is a painter, restorer, and object artist. Porath painted the work “Freiheit fängt von innen an” (“Freedom starts within”) in the East Side Gallery. Her painting no longer exists.
Porath’s Wall painting “Freiheit fängt von innen an” (“Freedom starts within”) shows abstract yellow areas that seem to stand out above the grey background. A thin red line, a crack in the centre, and the yellow areas all follow a thrust towards the top right corner. Porath added to her painting the words “Der Baum der Erkenntnis” (“The tree of knowledge”) from the Bible story of creation. To the artist, the Wall is a warning against any kind of intellectual, physical, or spiritual unfreedom. In 1995 she gave her consent to have her work painted over. She did not restore it in 2009 and it now no longer exists.
Porath studied art and visual communication at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main from 1973 to 1979. She is a landscape and animal painter, restorer, and object artist. Her work is both abstract and figurative and often inspired by spiritual themes. She has received several awards for her work and exhibited in Germany and abroad.
